Agnes Cornelia Tongue

Agnes Cornelia Tongue  Agnes Cornelia Tongue died April 5, 2016 at the Oaks of Mayview in Raleigh. She was the daughter of the late Annie Hardy and Ben Tongue and was born March 30, 1924. She graduated from Broughton High School, Saint Mary's College, Woman's College of the University of North Carolina (UNC-G), and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She taught in the New Hanover and Wake County Schools and the Raleigh City Schools before joining the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction where she headed the State's Gifted and Talented Program. 

Miss Tongue was a former chair of the Altar Guild and Senior Warden of The Church of Good Shepard; a trustee of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina; a member and officer of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society; the Urban Ministry Center; the Rehab Therapy Board; the Wake County Historical society; the Caswell-Nash Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution; a Board member of the N.C. Association for the Gifted and Talented and P.A.G.E., parents for the Advancement of Gifted Education. She was also President of the Council of State Directors of Programs for the Gifted and author or editor of many educational articles and publications on the gifted. 

Miss Tongue is survived by her nieces, Frances Henderson, Julia Henderson Todd, and Candace Anne Tongue and seven great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Benjamin Tongue, III, her sister, Anne Tongue and her nephews, Benjamin Hardy Tongue, Jesse James Henderson III and Harwood Griffin Tongue. 

The funeral will be held at 2:00 o'clock on Friday April 8, at the Church of the Good Shepard with burial following at Historic Oakwood Cemetery. There will be a reception at the church from 1-2 pm. 

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be sent to The Church of the Good Shepard, 125 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh NC 27603.
